A short film by Tom Werber
FUMES is a psychological thriller about one man’s journey to return to his family.
A mysterious crisis in London has led to the sudden breakdown of infrastructure and society itself seems to hang in the balance. Jared must escape the city to join Phoebe and their child in the countryside. As he prepares to leave, Sy, an old friend, appears unexpectedly needing a ride. They set out together through the disintegrating city, but on the road Jared becomes disturbed by Sy’s attitude: he seems to be revelling in the chaos. Jared’s misgivings and suspicions about Sy grow as the two drive out onto eerily deserted motorways and into the wide landscapes of rural England.
" Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity. "
WB Yeats (from The Second Coming)
The situations Jared and Sy encounter, their differing reactions and their motivations cause the already strained relationship to be pushed to the limit as they face their deepest fears and darkest desires.
This powerful and uncompromising story questions the true nature of our motives; even those that are hidden from ourselves.
When the things we rely on are taken away, what do we discover about ourselves? What happens to humanity in response to a changing world?
